The Salon

The Salon was a British reality TV show where various members of the public (some famous) were invited daily to have treatments (mostly hair styles) in a studio built beauty salon situated in Balham, south-west London, and in the second series, a purpose-built studio inside the Trocadero, Piccadilly Circus.

Overview

Viewers were given an insight into the running and bickering of life in a professional salon with manager Paul Merritt and his team of trainees and employees. The show was most notable for bringing fame to Brazilian-born hairstylist, Ricardo Ribeiro and introducing viewers to Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne's nephew, Terry Longden.

Broadcasts

It aired on Channel 4, with daily live coverage on E4 at certain times. The show began in 2003 and ended in early 2004. Brian Dowling was the narrator of the last series.

The show was produced by Endemol whose other work includes Big Brother.

The Salon is a 2005 comedy-drama film, directed by Mark Brown, executive produced by David Odom, and starring Vivica A. Fox, Kym Whitley, and Monica Calhoun. The movie was filmed in Baltimore, Maryland.

Plot

The Salon is an independent feature film that was developed, financed and produced by Howard University grads David Odom and Mark Brown. In the movie, Jenny Smith (Fox) owns a modest neighborhood beauty parlor that is hugely popular with the folks who reside on her street, but mom-and-pop businesses are going belly-up all over the place and lately a corporate giant has been clamoring to set up shop on the block. Despite formidable pressure from the Department of Water and Power, Jenny refuses to accept the offer made for her shop and decides to test her luck against the DWP in the local courthouse.

The Salon (comics)

The Salon is a graphic novel written and illustrated by Nick Bertozzi. Originally published in installments on the website serializer.net in 2002, it was eventually published in its entirety by St. Martin's Press in April 2007.

Plot

The story is set in 1907 in Paris, surrounding the birth of the Cubism art movement. Someone is murdering various painters, and a group forms to solve the mystery. Fictionalized characters include Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Gertrude Stein, and Erik Satie.

Reception

The Salon has been praised for its "rich personalities" and "brilliant premise". Publishers Weekly said the novel was executed "with wit and flair.The Salon was named on the Publishers Weekly list of best comics of 2007.

Historical accuracy

A scene in the book shows Picasso taking inspiration from a comic to complete a portrait of Gertrude Stein. While Picasso was a fan of William Randolph Hearst's comics, there is no historical evidence that they influenced his art. Bertozzi said of the comic, "Researching the personalities in The Salon led less to historical accuracy in terms of dates and places, but more, I feel, to an emotional reality".
